Wine Pairing at The Purple Trumpet
Written by Nads
Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:00

purple blog_01The Purple Trumpet guesthouse hosted a marvellous evening of fine dining with wine pairing courtesy of the outstanding wine estate Vrede & Lust. The stylish backdrop of sleek white and soothing contemporary music tones created the ideal setting for an evening of culinary delight.

Nico Davel introduced the wine connoisseurs to the exquisite Stellenbosch estate, situated at the foothills of the Simonsberg. A unique element of the estate is the two formidable female winemakers. In equal standing with their male counter-parts, they have raked in the awards, including winemaker of the year in 2007.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Cynthia's Indigo Moon (2)

waterford_blog_01Another delectable evening of fine dining and superb wines! Cynthia’s Indigo Moon hosted us for the second time (we just love their upstairs private dining area so much that we had to book it out again!) The Waterford Estate came to dazzle us with their selection of outstanding vintages. And the delicious dishes complimented the wines perfectly.

The Waterford Estate is relatively young in the wine game, founded in 1998 when Jeremy and Leigh Ord purchased the prime Stellenbosch vineyard land. It was previously part of the Stellenrust Farm. Kevin and Heather Arnold, good friends of the Ord family, were responsible for identifying the exclusive site. These two families had a shared dream, in their words “to create a wine farm where life is cherished, the seasons mark time and the fruit always reminds of blessings, abundance and the beauty of nature”.

blog_vrede_lust_02We kicked off our 2013 Wine Club season in style at Bronberg Wynlandgoed. This charming restaurant and wedding venue was opened in April 2010, with buildings in the typical Cape Dutch style and interiors reminiscent of stylish wine cellars. The perfect location for a decadent evening of wine pairing!

Vrede & Lust wine estate complimented the dishes prepared by the Bronberg team impeccably. Situated at the foothills of the Simonsberg, this exquisite estate boasts with a history that goes as far back as 1688. Nico Davel took us on a virtual journey, with colourful stories of the estate’s origins and wine philosophy.

blu saffron02_blog_03We couldn’t resist, we squeezed one more wine club in for the year! A great way to end the year with a big bang, we had the pleasure of tasting the lovely wines from De Morgenzon Wine Estate, with wines from their Garden Vineyards and DMZ ranges.

And our host for the evening, the Blu Saffron restaurant, complimented the wines perfectly with their wonderful dishes. The careful pairing brought out the best qualities in each glass of wine. With its understated elegance, the restaurant’s private dining area creates a great intimate setting.

kamers_blog_01KAMERS vol geskenke is a creative initiate, started 10 years ago. With the philosophy ‘share, support, believe’ they have created an artistic hub, where creativity can flow unhindered, to inspire and give local small businesses the opportunity to showcase their amazing handiwork to patrons very willing and eager to support them.

The concept originated in 2003, with humble beginnings in an empty house. It rapidly grew in popularity – the first event reaching 800 visitors, to last year’s events reaching all together 25 000 visitors. The first Pretoria event was hosted in 2010 and this year another location was added with Bloemfontein also hosting this amazing concept.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Caraffa

Monday, 22 October 2012 00:00
The final PRETORIA.co.za Wine Club of 2012caraffa_blog02 was hosted at Caraffa Ristorante with Saronsberg Wine Estate. The warm, cosy ambiance of the restaurant created the perfect setting to relax with good friends, great food and excellent wine.  The old world charm of Caraffa whisked us away for a moment to an Italian feast, hidden in the private dining area we explored the treasures of the Saronsberg Estate.

Tyron Dewing and Mandy Dewing introduced us to this exquisite estate.  Saronsberg, a recent addition to the Tulbagh valley, was formed late 2002.  Two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen, Waveren and Welgegund, were purchased and combined to create a distinctive location for this progressive winery.

A Great Fashion Collaboration

nea_blog_01Marlie van Vuuren (NEA Foundation) and Christal van Tonder (Mix and Match Studio) realised that there is a gap in the fashion industry for job creation.  With the facilities already in place at Mix and Match Studio, the NEA Foundation provided the opportunity for the first group of ladies to embark on a new career.

Although the foundation’s main focus is early childhood development, they encountered so many unemployed moms, that they decided to investigate a way of helping these ladies make a livelihood for their families.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at The Harlequin
Written by Nads
Tuesday, 04 September 2012 22:06
uva_blog_01PRETORIA.co.za’s sixth wine club event, the second last one of the year, was hosted at the recent addition to the Harlequin’s Rugby Club – The Harlequin Restaurant.  This rugby union was created in 1906 and it’s a firm fixture in the local community.  The new restaurant and sports bar compliment it perfectly, with the outside deck area overlooking the practice fields.

The crisp outside setting was perfect to celebrate the approaching warm weather.  Uva Mira (meaning “special grape”, and we definitely found out what makes it so special) provided outstanding boutique wines to sample with a delectable five-course meal prepared by Niel Sirmon, The Harlequin chef.

The importance of wine with food in the setting of a great restaurant
Written by Fortunato Mazzone (Ritrovo)
Tuesday, 07 August 2012 11:36

wineWhat separates man from the beasts? How did we end up the dominating species on our little blue planet, right at the top of the food chain? Was it the use of tools, or the need to cultivate things, the use of language, maybe? The sum total of all the possible reasons distilled, is something we call "culture and civilisation".  It can be successfully argued that in the manic pace of the modern world (the rat race to get ahead with corporate gerbils treading furiously on the spinning wheel of the road to nowhere) the catastrophe of fast food and the resulting avalanche of health problems, mental disease and mass obesity (can you put these two words together?) is that this process of civilisation is showing signs of a shaky regression.

Kollig Kollektief

Wine Club at Capeesh?
Written by Nads
Monday, 09 July 2012 13:17
1207-wineclub-capeesh2We had our own kind of fireworks display for the 4th of July, erupting in each superb glass of wine!  Cederberg Wines visited with us at Capeesh? in Brooklyn to tell us a bit more about their unique wine estate and to let us taste some of their creations.  With its unique location, the highest estate above sea level at 1 036m, the quality of wine produced is exceptional.
The cold climate and secluded location, with its pure mountain air and water, safeguards the vines from viruses. These exclusive elements ensure high quality wine production.  The farm has been in the Nieuwoudt family for five generations and David Nieuwoudt currently manages the wine production.

Capeesh? with its distinctive rough brick interior and old world charm was the perfect intimate setting to explore this lovely wine estate.  Vintage photos on display in wooden frames give it the feel of an Italian home opened up to the public.

Nation Builder Project

The Nation Builder initiative was officially launched a month ago and already they have some big guns on board – shopping centres Menlyn, Cresta, Cavendish and Pavilion; the new King Price insurance company and USN to drop but a few names...  So, what exactly is Nation Builder?  It was created as a response to the fact that companies want to do more for the future of our country, supporting impactful and credible projects – but don’t know where to start.  Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is a term that easily gets flung around in big company meetings, but not many people know exactly how to fully utilise this aspect of their social responsibility.

Stephnies_Wine_Club_01“Life is too short to drink bad wine”- Anonymous.
This is why we decided to invite Val de Vie back for a second time to come and impress us again with their formidable selection of superb wines!  The setting – Stephnie’s in Lynnwood Bridge – provided the perfect backdrop for a stylish evening of gourmet dishes selected to compliment the choice of exceptional vintages.

Stephnie’s crisp interior is balanced with strategic use of plain brick walls and splashes of wood.  The interesting forest of lights against the ceiling and welcoming fireplace in the corner enfolded the space in a pleasant warmth.  We had the pleasure of two celebrities joining us, Ryk Neethling shared his passion for the Val de Vie Estate and Matthys Roets enjoyed the quality wines.

music_in_the_gardens_blog_cover“Jy dink jy’s cooler as ekke…”  Ever since Jack Parow appeared on the music scene in 2009, he’s made too many fans (and enemies) to count.  We had the pleasure of seeing him in action, supported by the local band Black Cat Bones, at a great music initiative called Music in the Gardens.

The Old Mutual Music Series alternates every Sunday between the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens and the Walter Sisulu Gardens, from May till September.  A delicious way of spending a winter Sunday afternoon, enjoying the outdoors with good music vibes – without getting scorched by a blistering sun!

The upcoming music acts range from rock, to funky Afrikaans, to pop (see below a list of the upcoming concerts, also keep an eye on our events guide to see who’s joining the main acts)

The third PRETORIA.co.za Wine Club did not disappoint to deliver a superb evening of great wine and good food. Hosted at the stylish Cynthia’s Indigo Moon in the private upper dining room with its warm ambiance, the evening unfolded into an informative and fun affair. Georgio Meletiou, known as a wine presenter extraordinaire, did the exquisite wines of the Beau Joubert Estate great justice by exploring every fine taste nuance found in each glass. With his extensive expertise as professional wine presenter and sommelier, he was the perfect host for the evening.

Wine Club with Val de Vie at Blu Saffron
Written by Nads
Tuesday, 07 February 2012 11:15

Ryk Neethling serving the guests with Val de Vie's award winning wineThe setting of PRETORIA.co.za's second wine club complimented the wine estate perfectly. Blu Saffron with its unpretentious elegance and rolling green hills view could make you think for a moment that the location was closer to the lovely Paarl than to Menlyn shopping centre. Hidden away in the Pretoria Country Club, the Blu Saffron's private dining room created an intimate space to sample great wine with good food.

Val de Vie, short for Valley of Life, has been a force to reckon with since 1783, when the original land was given to Huguenot descendant Abraham Andries le Roux. In 2006 the estate embarked on a unique quest to cultivate the distinguished Rhône varietals.

Park Acoustics

crowds1Park Acoustics, hosted at the Voortrekker Monument, is growing in popularity by the minute! It's becoming a monthly institution not to be missed. And with the inclusion of an international band in the last show, a new record has been set for the amount of people that can be squeezed into the open air venue.

Selling over 2000 tickets, the big hit of Sunday's gig was definitely the acclaimed band KONGOS – four brothers currently living in Phoenix, Arizona but with South African roots. Their famous muso dad, John Kongos, started his career in Johannesburg before travelling to Europe. He met his wife, an American, in London and thereafter came back to Johannesburg. His boys spent much of their youth in South Africa before moving to America.

Chatting to them, they admitted that coming back to South Africa had quite an unexpected emotional edge to it, returning after being out of the country for 15 years.

HARDT Exhibition Opening
Written by Nads
Friday, 02 December 2011 07:00

blog-Hardt1The beautiful garden setting of the Cari-Mari gallery, with its spacious lawn and tall Jacarandas, played the perfect host for the fun concept of the HARDT exhibition. Potentially the first in a series of exhibitions, the idea was launched with great success.

Walking in, a playground theme from the good ol' days greeted you, serenaded by the Briels music in the background: girls playing hop scotch, boys climbing trees and throwing paper airplanes. All the kids were dressed in school clothes with a typical dutch influence – the girls with puffy white pants and Voortrekker bonnets, the boys with suspenders and quaint little hats. Hanna Grobler, the mastermind behind the evening, decided to fuse her extensive art repertoire by mixing little dramas in-between the art pieces. The exhibition displays her vast talent, with paintings and sculptures for sale.
