Love this City!

I would like to introduce myself as your virtual tour guide to Pretoria, the purpose of this blog is to explore our city from various angles and see what it really has to offer us.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Al Dente
Tuesday, 28 May 2013 00:00

sterhuis_01 There is a little centre in Waterkloof with a superb collection of fine dining spots, we had the privilege of hosting our winter wine club at Al Dente, a cozy Italian restaurant. The Italian term means "to the tooth" or "to the bite" and the fantastic food that was prepared by Dino Fagas and his team definitely kept our mouths busy all night to savour the decadent delights!

Sterhuis wine estate impeccably complimented the dishes with their finest wines. The farm at the top of Stellenbosch’s Bottelary hills, was bought as a retirement project/investment by André Kruger in 1980. Initially, the grapes were just sold, but in 1998 his son Johan got involved as manager/winemaker to produce their own wine.

Wine Pairing at The Purple Trumpet
Tuesday, 26 March 2013 00:00

purple blog_01The Purple Trumpet guesthouse hosted a marvellous evening of fine dining with wine pairing courtesy of the outstanding wine estate Vrede & Lust. The stylish backdrop of sleek white and soothing contemporary music tones created the ideal setting for an evening of culinary delight.

Nico Davel introduced the wine connoisseurs to the exquisite Stellenbosch estate, situated at the foothills of the Simonsberg. A unique element of the estate is the two formidable female winemakers. In equal standing with their male counter-parts, they have raked in the awards, including winemaker of the year in 2007.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Cynthia's Indigo Moon (2)
Thursday, 14 March 2013 00:00

waterford_blog_01Another delectable evening of fine dining and superb wines! Cynthia’s Indigo Moon hosted us for the second time (we just love their upstairs private dining area so much that we had to book it out again!) The Waterford Estate came to dazzle us with their selection of outstanding vintages. And the delicious dishes complimented the wines perfectly.

The Waterford Estate is relatively young in the wine game, founded in 1998 when Jeremy and Leigh Ord purchased the prime Stellenbosch vineyard land. It was previously part of the Stellenrust Farm. Kevin and Heather Arnold, good friends of the Ord family, were responsible for identifying the exclusive site. These two families had a shared dream, in their words “to create a wine farm where life is cherished, the seasons mark time and the fruit always reminds of blessings, abundance and the beauty of nature”.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Bronberg Wynlandgoed
Monday, 04 February 2013 00:00

blog_vrede_lust_02We kicked off our 2013 Wine Club season in style at Bronberg Wynlandgoed. This charming restaurant and wedding venue was opened in April 2010, with buildings in the typical Cape Dutch style and interiors reminiscent of stylish wine cellars. The perfect location for a decadent evening of wine pairing!

Vrede & Lust wine estate complimented the dishes prepared by the Bronberg team impeccably. Situated at the foothills of the Simonsberg, this exquisite estate boasts with a history that goes as far back as 1688. Nico Davel took us on a virtual journey, with colourful stories of the estate’s origins and wine philosophy.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Blu Saffron
Thursday, 29 November 2012 00:00

blu saffron02_blog_03We couldn’t resist, we squeezed one more wine club in for the year! A great way to end the year with a big bang, we had the pleasure of tasting the lovely wines from De Morgenzon Wine Estate, with wines from their Garden Vineyards and DMZ ranges.

And our host for the evening, the Blu Saffron restaurant, complimented the wines perfectly with their wonderful dishes. The careful pairing brought out the best qualities in each glass of wine. With its understated elegance, the restaurant’s private dining area creates a great intimate setting.

KAMERS vol Geskenke
Monday, 26 November 2012 00:00
kamers_blog_01KAMERS vol geskenke is a creative initiate, started 10 years ago. With the philosophy ‘share, support, believe’ they have created an artistic hub, where creativity can flow unhindered, to inspire and give local small businesses the opportunity to showcase their amazing handiwork to patrons very willing and eager to support them.

The concept originated in 2003, with humble beginnings in an empty house. It rapidly grew in popularity – the first event reaching 800 visitors, to last year’s events reaching all together 25 000 visitors. The first Pretoria event was hosted in 2010 and this year another location was added with Bloemfontein also hosting this amazing concept.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at Caraffa
Monday, 22 October 2012 00:00
The final PRETORIA.co.za Wine Club of 2012caraffa_blog02 was hosted at Caraffa Ristorante with Saronsberg Wine Estate. The warm, cosy ambiance of the restaurant created the perfect setting to relax with good friends, great food and excellent wine.  The old world charm of Caraffa whisked us away for a moment to an Italian feast, hidden in the private dining area we explored the treasures of the Saronsberg Estate.

Tyron Dewing and Mandy Dewing introduced us to this exquisite estate.  Saronsberg, a recent addition to the Tulbagh valley, was formed late 2002.  Two farm portions of the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen, Waveren and Welgegund, were purchased and combined to create a distinctive location for this progressive winery.

A Great Fashion Collaboration
Thursday, 04 October 2012 12:12
nea_blog_01Marlie van Vuuren (NEA Foundation) and Christal van Tonder (Mix and Match Studio) realised that there is a gap in the fashion industry for job creation.  With the facilities already in place at Mix and Match Studio, the NEA Foundation provided the opportunity for the first group of ladies to embark on a new career.

Although the foundation’s main focus is early childhood development, they encountered so many unemployed moms, that they decided to investigate a way of helping these ladies make a livelihood for their families.

PRETORIA.co.za's Wine Club at The Harlequin
Tuesday, 04 September 2012 22:06
uva_blog_01PRETORIA.co.za’s sixth wine club event, the second last one of the year, was hosted at the recent addition to the Harlequin’s Rugby Club – The Harlequin Restaurant.  This rugby union was created in 1906 and it’s a firm fixture in the local community.  The new restaurant and sports bar compliment it perfectly, with the outside deck area overlooking the practice fields.

The crisp outside setting was perfect to celebrate the approaching warm weather.  Uva Mira (meaning “special grape”, and we definitely found out what makes it so special) provided outstanding boutique wines to sample with a delectable five-course meal prepared by Niel Sirmon, The Harlequin chef.
