Val de Vie, short for Valley of Life, has been a force to reckon with since 1783, when the original land was given to Huguenot descendant Abraham Andries le Roux. In 2006 the estate embarked on a unique quest to cultivate the distinguished Rhône varietals.
Inspired by the vintages of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Val de Vie has managed to successfully incorporate 15 out of the total 22 Rhône varietals on the estate. An intriguing element of the Rhône varietals, is the flexibility of taste sensations created from various Rhône combinations. The possibilities are almost endless!
Harold Versfeld (Val de Vie winemaker) and Ryk Neethling (Val de Vie marketing director) introduced the Val de Vie wines with expertise and passion. They presented a Chenin, Cabernet Franc, GVC, Shiraz and of course the Ryk Neethling for delectable sampling. Blu Saffron provided impeccable choices to bring out the best flavours of each wine: starters included a biltong salad, smoked springbok carpaccio, chicken livers; mains: rump, fresh kingklip, duck and for dessert blueberry cheese cake or a strawberry torté.
Val de Vie has won numerous awards for their innovative wines, including a best in class gold medal for the 2007 Val de Vie Shiraz at the 2009 International Wine & Spirit Competition and recently another gold for the 1783 blend at the 2011 International Wine & Spirit Competition. It is not difficult to taste that this estate is a leader in the wine industry, it boasts with the most extensive range of Rhône-style wines from South African soil.
Adel van Zyl and Nannette Erasmus were the lucky winners of the website competition for sought after complimentary tickets to the wine club.
