blu saffron02_blog_03We couldn’t resist, we squeezed one more wine club in for the year! A great way to end the year with a big bang, we had the pleasure of tasting the lovely wines from De Morgenzon Wine Estate, with wines from their Garden Vineyards and DMZ ranges.

And our host for the evening, the Blu Saffron restaurant, complimented the wines perfectly with their wonderful dishes. The careful pairing brought out the best qualities in each glass of wine. With its understated elegance, the restaurant’s private dining area creates a great intimate setting.

The wine estate was established in 1699, with the first vines being planted in the early 1700’s. The name DeMorgenzon, meaning 'the morning sun', was chosen because it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to catch the first rays of sun. In 2003 Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum bought the estate and transformed it to harness its full potential.

A very unique winemaking technique is incorporate to enhance the vines and the wines that is produced. Classical music (Baroque) is played over speakers continuously day and night. Although no extensive scientific investigation has been undertaken to prove these theories, books such as The Sound of Music and Plants (1973) detail experiments conducted on this subject. It was concluded at the Colorado Woman’s College in Denver that “playing soothing music to plants made them grow faster, more vigorously and healthier.”

To celebrate this excellent estate, Blu Saffron opened the evening with a Melba Toast and Gravadlax snack as Appetizer, paired with the De Morgenzon Rose (2011) With the pallets prepared for more decadent dining, the Starter was served – a herb salad with prawns, fresh herb salad base topped with pan-fried prawns and a light vinaigrette. The De Morgenzon Sauvignon Blanc (2012) accentuated the seafood dish perfectly.
