blog_vrede_lust_02We kicked off our 2013 Wine Club season in style at Bronberg Wynlandgoed. This charming restaurant and wedding venue was opened in April 2010, with buildings in the typical Cape Dutch style and interiors reminiscent of stylish wine cellars. The perfect location for a decadent evening of wine pairing!

Vrede & Lust wine estate complimented the dishes prepared by the Bronberg team impeccably. Situated at the foothills of the Simonsberg, this exquisite estate boasts with a history that goes as far back as 1688. Nico Davel took us on a virtual journey, with colourful stories of the estate’s origins and wine philosophy.

The original owner, Flemish merchant Jacques de Savoye (1688), was enthralled by the beauty of the area, and upon registering the wine estate wanted to capture this in the name. He considered the peace and passion (or peace and eagerness) that came to mind when he thought of his estate. But with a lax translation moment, it was registered as “Vrede en Lust”, the latter part a bit more crude than his romantic notions. The farm has exchanged hands with 17 owners over the past centuries, the Buys family its latest, since 1996. With innovative ideas about winemaking, they have claimed numerous awards. Also, the estate was the leading “actor” in a local movie, Semi-soet (2012)
The welcome drink, Jess Dry Rosé 2012, with its refreshing taste set the bar very high for the tasting evening. The vintage was named in celebration of the Buys’ eldest daughter. Dinner was introduced with a Tomato Rocket entrées – bruschetta with springbok carpaccio, paired exquisitely with the Sauvignon Blanc 2011. This was followed by a light salad of smoked chicken and avocado, complimented by the Chardonnay 2011.

Just for the joy of sampling fine wines, we enjoyed an in-betweener, The Red Lady 2011. The main course followed – oven roasted mini lamb shank, served with roast vegetables and mashed potatoes, served with the Syrah 2009.

blog_vrede_lust_03 To complete the evening of superb feasting the dolce was presented – a dark chocolate & berry mousse, flattered by the Mocholate 2012.Bronberg Wynlandgoed was an impeccable host for the lovely evening, with the team presenting only the best of their culinary delights. And what a joy to savour the flavours even more intensely with the splendid vintages presented by Vrede & Lust.
