Groenkloof Mountain Biking |
The word winter falls under the “dirty words” category to most South Africans. We loathe it! As soon as the sun disappears so does our sunny disposition. BUT, things are looking – or rather heating – up. With temperatures hiking up over the 20 degree mark, so is our excitement at getting back to the great outdoors. We have our charcoal waiting, our pool nets off and best of all our bicycles and hiking boots ready and waiting at the front door! We want out of the house ASAP, and where better to spend a day in the sun than the Groenkloof Nature Reserve?
Proclaimed in 1895 as a game sanctuary by Paul Kruger, this stunning reserve has been the host ever since to an assortment of wildlife including zebra, jackal, duiker, kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, blesbuck, red hartebeest, ostrich, giraffe and sable. Not to mention the rich bird life which will keep bird lovers busy for hours on end.
But, don’t think the animals are where the fun ends; there is a wide assortment of activities that can be done on the reserve. Three different length hiking trails are available from a beginners trail to one that will cater for those with a bit more experience, and if hiking isn’t your thing, you can explore these trails on horseback. There is also a 20km mountain bike route for the more adventurous spirits as well as a 4x4 driving trail guaranteed to muck up your mud flaps!
And the best part is that once you’ve done your activity for the day, you can lay out a blanket in the picnic area, throw some chops on the braai, crack open a cold one and stretch out in the sun. Does it get better than this? We think not.
Who would have thought that all this could be found just over 5km’s out of the city centre? Bring on the summer!
