Explore The Herb Farm With The Kids These Holidays

This December, bring the kids along to the Herb Farm in Midrand for fun, sunshine and yummy waffles.

The Herb Farm

Amazing Mazes, Fresh Herbs and Sunshine

We’ve all been there – it’s a glorious day outside, but all the kids want to do is slouch in front of their iPads watching Frozen  for the millionth time. These holidays, make it a rule that fresh air and a good dose of sun is a must by bringing the kids to The Herb Farm in Midrand. The 40-minute or so drive is well worth the trip with busy bodies in the back seat. The view from the parking is enough to grab the attention of the little ones. Plus, all you really need to do to convince them to come along is the promise of a wonderland-meets-playground in the garden and waffles with vanilla ice cream, all of which The Herb Farm can supply in abundance!

Take the kids on a journey through The Herb Farm’s mazes and planted gardens before heading to the Play Yard. Here, you can find an array of healing plants, pretty petals and happily buzzing insects. With over 400 herbal species, The Herb Farm is as unique as it gets. And the smell is to die for! As you make your way through the rose gardens, stop to appreciate time with the family. There are bound to be tons of photo opportunities at this point, so bring your cameras along.

The Play Yard

Imagine a paradise for the kids – now open your eyes to the spectacular Play Yard at The Herb Farm. Open from Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays, this outdoor play area is all about letting the kids get their hands dirty, offering ample running space, obstacle challenges, adorable play houses, cooking lessons and herb gardening. The Play Yard is an outdoor educational facility, dedicated to teaching children about herbs, vegetables, fruit, sustainability and a healthy lifestyle. Let your brood come and create their own concoctions in the kitchen or craft studio. It’s perfect for kiddies aged 3 – 10.

The Herb Farm Play Yard also hosts birthday parties! So, instead of cooping the kids up at a mall restaurant with limited space to play, bring the birthday person and their buddies here. All you have to do is let the Play Yard know the theme of the birthday and the colour scheme, and the decor will be sorted. They also offer catering for both children and adults, so no need to fuss over snacks. Young party goers can tuck into a choice of meatballs, cheese grillers or triangular sandwiches, while the grown ups can choose from a savoury platter, sweet platter, vegan platter, cheese platter or a healthy variety of nibbles including cheesy stuffed mushrooms, hummus, olives and seasonal fruit. Yum.

The Herb Farm Bistro

Once the kids have worked up a sweat at the Play Yard, treat them to something sweet at The Herb Farm Bistro. This 70-seater eatery serves up a classic selection of cakes and pastries, served with a herbaceous twist. While the kids might not appreciate a rosemary infused muffin or scone, they will certainly love the Minty Waffle or Pancakes served with ice cream. Made with strictly free-range eggs, stone ground flour and herbs from their own gardens, these desserts make the perfect end to a day spent in the outdoors. The bistro also serve creamy milkshakes, babychinos (frothed milk with bar one chocolate sauce) and homemade rooibos ice tea.

Does your mini-me have a sophisticated palate and sense of style? Bring them to The Herb Farm’s elegant high tea events. Hosted on the last Sunday of every month, this is the perfect outing for mom and daughter. At only *R250 per person, you get an assortment of snacks, cakes and herbal teas to enjoy among the buzzing bees. Secure your booking via email at [email protected]
