Mo + November = Movember, that’s the equation. And mo is the Australian-English diminutive word for moustache. Movember is an annual, global event involving the growing of moustaches during the month to raise awareness about men’s health and mental issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide.
What Is Movember?
There’s more to this initiative than men simply growing moustaches for the month of November. While making this statement, it’s also about raising awareness about the health and mental issues affecting men. Movember campaigns around the world raise awareness and funds for brothers, dads, fathers and all the other men in our lives. Together we can make a difference, so join in by growing your mo this November.
Movember South Africa
The Men’s Foundation of South Africa drives the local Movember initiative in support of men’s health. The charity tackles issues of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Amazing work right? We think so too. They have made it known that men’s health is in crisis: men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier, prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years, while testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years. For more information about this initiative click here.
PinkDrive: More Balls Than Most
The PinkDrive is not only supporting women living with cancer but also prioritising the health of men through More Balls Than Most (MBTM), the brother charity of the PinkDrive. MBTM’s focus is on prostate and testicular cancer education and awareness. They also host events for cancer awareness.
Prostate cancer is characterised by the difficulty to urinate, need to urinate often, blood in urine, pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs. The MBTM does a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which is just a finger prick that tells you on the spot if you are at risk or you need to consult a doctor.
You can do a self-examination at home. Click here to find out how. Testicular cancer is characterised by a painful swelling or lump in one or both testicles, pain or feeling of heaviness in the testicles, an ache in the lower abdomen, back or groin. Feel educated yet? We definitely are!
Mens Clinic doesn’t only focus on men’s sexual health but supports every health issue that both men and women are faced with including cancer. Visit their website for more information.
