Park Acoustics Turns 10!

Trek maar voor boedie, Park Acoustics is turning 10, and 2020 looks set to be a great year for the event.

For those not in the know, Park Acoustics is a monthly gathering that happens on the last Sunday of every month at the Voortrekker Monument. An outdoor music festival held at Fort Schanskop, its ethos is lekker music, affable congregation and peaceful laziness.

Now turning ten, Park Acoustics has become a mainstay for thousands in and around Pretoria. Fear not, because although you’re not allowed to bring your own gas and potjie, BraaiBoy has teamed up here! Bring your goodies to cook and other lekkergoed, and you can braai, chew and soak up the music. Park Acoustics events are now well organised in terms of parking, catering, seating and whatever else you may need, so it really is a venue where you can take some tjops, Simba chips and a blanket and have a perfect day, all day.

Happy Birthday PA

Being its tenth birthday year, Park Acoustics will no doubt climb another notch. Many of South Africa’s most popular rock, rap, folk and indie stars have graced the stage here, and there’s also another comedy stage and a jolling dance tent apart from the main stage. Boasting a “super fun and diverse lineup booked for 2 Feb,” the year has already kicked off and some great music and gesellige dae lie ahead. Desmond and the Tutus, Early B, Koos Kombuis, Hellcats, Southern Gypsy Queen and Ruiter Piet en die Partydjie are all billed for early February, so it’s going to be a great bash.

The comedy stage has become a live wire too, and at the same event of 2 February 2020, you’re going to find Gino Fernandez, Lindy Johnson and Deep Fried Man.

It’s difficult to remember when Park Acoustics took place at the Botanical Gardens, but the move to Fort Schanskop has proved to be a good one in the long term. The old laid back atmosphere persisted and grew, where today so many people tend to make a day of it, and bring chairs, blankets and a picnic basket. One of the best parts about the venue is the expansive views over downtown skyscraper Pretoria, and the sunset from the venue. Lovely vistas, happily at home – that’s the vibe, so spoil yourself with a glimpse of the beautiful city at sundown while the music rocks on.

Although officially open at 12pm, go buy tickets at the gate around 10am, if you haven’t online. Also, if you want your tickets to allow you to be seated where you’d like, it’s better to get there mid-morning, as the place fills up fast. Tickets sell out by the afternoon for the seats inside the fort, at least.

There’s a bar (you’re allowed your own, but not in glass please) and food stalls, and if you really want to diversify, go hike or bike up trails around the monument. For this, you’ll have to pay separately as it’s a different part of the venue management’s jurisdiction, and doesn’t fall under Park Acoustics. Most folks come for relaxed fun, and that’s really what the Park Acoustics experience is all about.
