The Javett-UP Art Centre – Home of the Art of Africa
The highly-anticipated Javett-UP Art Centre opens its doors to the public on 24 September 2019. Situated at the University of Pretoria South Campus, this art gallery is determined to become the official home of the art of Africa. This is a place for all to visit. Whether you are a seasoned gallery visitor, an art student or just interested in learning more about art. All you need is a genuine interest in and respect for African art.
The Javett-UP Art Centre encourages visitors to go on a journey through the great art of Africa. Although an often difficult journey, it is one we all must take. This journey allows us all to gain a better understanding of Africa’s past, present and future. Showcasing our cultural heritage, this new art centre is set apart from all others. As Pretoria’s new cultural hub, the Javett-UP Art Centre is a must-visit.
Heritage Day Celebrations
The Javett-UP Art Centre welcomes its first visitors with a fantastic family-fun celebration. Heritage Day 2019 just got a whole lot more interesting, as the gallery debuts its opening. So, instead of your usual braai, swim and afternoon nap, rather come through to the centre for their first four ground-breaking exhibitions!
The first exhibition features a collection of 101 signature works of South African art. Selected from collections around the country, this is the perfect place to start off your tour. Moving on, the second exhibition features an impressive collection from the Javett Family Collection of South African modern art. Visitors can then admire an exhibition of significant gold pieces from the Mapungubwe Gold Collection, after which follows AngloGold’s Barbier-Mueller Collection, featuring more than 350 items of gold from West Africa.
If these marvelous art displays aren’t enough to get you excited, Javett-UP will also be entertaining you and the family with gourmet food stalls and awesome live entertainment. Partnering with the awesome Market @ The Sheds to bring you the yummiest burgers, waffles and snacks, as well as delicious craft drinks. So, bring the kids along for a Heritage Day celebration unlike any other.
Entrance to the gallery is free between Tuesday, 24 September and Sunday, 29 September 2019. However, you must book tickets to receive the guided tour and entrance to the market. Click here to book your tickets.
Gautrain Shuttle Service
Gautrain is taking the stress out of hauling the whole family along to the Javett-UP Art Centre this Heritage Day. Offering a shuttle service between Hatfield Station and the art centre, the Gautrain just made your day a whole lot easier.
