Wild about Whisky
Ok, we said “in the city” but would be remiss if we neglected to first pitch a true whisky venue that’s a bit of a drive away. The thing is, if you’re going for the whole whisky experience, you might as well gear up, dress up, and drive out to Wild about Whisky, situated in Naledi Drive in Dullstroom. “Wild about Whisky – bar, shop and blog.” That’s what they say, and they’re not mucking about. Probably the most whisky-centric venue in the country, these guys have an online shop, a truly massive range of whiskies in-store, and a highly informative, intelligent blog site.
Wild about Whisky will eagerly accommodate you if you’d like to set up a whisky gathering for any purposes – tasting and sampling, education around the beverage, or if you simply want to lag lekker watching your mate fall off the bar stool by the end of it all! Jokes aside, this is a hall of academia when it comes to whisky, and if Wild about Whisky gives you the intel, you know it’s good.
Beyond such serious pursuits, it’s just a great venue to visit and broaden your palate in matters whisky. For the record, whisky is whiskey, and vice versa. The Irish popped the “e” in there, although the Scots say “whisky,” so definitely insist that the bottle says “Whiskey” when buying Irish, well, whiskey. The Americans took to the Irish spelling too, hence two completely acceptable spellings of the same brew.
P.S. They do all manner of whisky education, occasions, and gift vouchers. They also offer to buy whisky collections, in case you have an ensemble gathering dust in a dark corner of the garage. These guys have the “second largest whisky collection in the world” – it’s no lie – so that gives you an idea of the level of commitment here!
Cubana Sunnyside (and Menlyn)
No, Cubana isn’t renowned for being an aficionado’s whisky venue, but watch this space. Compelled more, we surmise, by their claim to offer great cigars, whisky is not far behind. The near future is likely to see Cubana making something of a name for itself among whisky drinkers.
The current selection isn’t phenomenal, just adequate. But if sucking big cigars while sippin’ some firewater is your thing, Cubana is definitely a venue to choose from. There are branches in Sunnyside and Menlyn, and the more Pretorians head into Cubana demanding fine whisky, the greater their offering is likely to grow. Right now, cocktails still usually trump their whisky offering, but, well, watch this space…
The Globe Bar
Situated in Times Square, The Globe Bar is another venue that offers great whisky almost by default. A top-tier gastronomy venue that also dishes up some fantastic drinky-winkies, it’s almost inevitable that they too will develop a name as a great whisky outlet.
Make no mistake, you can always find great whisky to taste here, although they’re not as whisky-focused as, say, Wild about Whisky. Nonetheless – and serious whisky drinkers can probably fill you in on this too – the bar offers a welcome selection with the right ambiance to take your time and allow that whisky essence to permeate your being. Jazz or Lounge House will waft over you, and a decidedly sophisticated air graces proceedings.
Little known for its whisky offering, Priva nonetheless matches some of the best with its whisky menu. Better known for culinary delights and a service level a cut above, Priva can still stake a claim as one of the bespoke whisky venues of Pretoria.
With outstanding rooftop views over the Waterkloof valley, Priva does any afternoon or evening spent sipping the good stuff complete justice. One up the nose for Cubana, their cigar offering is also already legend, and the whiskey menu is probably still only a guarded secret because of connoisseurs’ jealousy! Those who drink whisky there swear by the place, and no one who visits will be disappointed.
